| Biology: Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita | ||||||||||
| Nematodes are microscopically small worms that are capable of effectively parasitizing and killing slugs. The nematodes are applied as a drench to the soil surface. Following application of the nematodes, they actively search for their prey and invade it via the respiratory opening under the mantle. Special bacteria, living in symbiosis with the nematodes, are released, multiply rapidly and act as food for the nematodes. An infected slug stops feeding within 3 to 5 days and then displays a typical swelling of the mantle. The nematodes multiply inside the slug and when it starts to decompose, a new generation of nematodes spreads and starts looking for the next prey.

| Phasmarhabditis-System works best at a soil temperature of 15°C (min. 5°C and max. 20°C). In the open air this is between March and October, in sheltered cultivations this is practically all the year round. In order to protect young seedlings or cuttings against slugs, it is best to apply the nematodes 1 week in advance. In that way, the damage will remain practically nil. In order to obtain proper penetration when applying the product, it must be ensured that the soil is and remains humid. Application of Phasmarhabditis-System provides protection against slugs for at least 6 weeks. After these 6 weeks the activity of the nematodes can be restrained under the influence of naturally occurring predatory nematodes and parasitic fungi.

| Phasmarhabditis-System is formulated in a specially developed inert carrier. It is available in packs of 12 million or 30 million nematodes, sufficient to treat respectively 40 or 100 m². The nematodes are brought in suspension by mixing the product with water. This suspension can be spread across the surface to be treated by means of for instance a watering can.

| User's instructions | ||||||||||
| Phasmarhabditis-System is best used preventively. It is non-toxic to humans and harmless to plants.
Phasmarhabditis-System should be used within two days after receipt. Phasmarhabditis-System should be stored in a dark, cool room. For longer storage, put in the refrigerator (5°C), but do not freeze. Phasmarhabditis-System should always be used before expiry date stated on the pack.
Phasmarhabditis-System is available in two different packages:
Small areas can be treated by means of a watering can, larger areas with a sprayer (maximum spraying pressure 5 bar). Use a nozzle and filters with an opening of at least 1 mm. Do not use centrigugal pumps. Use entire pack contents at one time!
3 to 5 days after application, an infected slug stops feeding. Most slugs will die underground within 2 weeks after application. Infected slugs may show a swelling of the mantle. Phasmarhabditis-System provides protection for at least 6 weeks. For plants which require protection for a longer period, a second treatment may be necessary.
