Pollination
In general, the quantity of seeds in a fruit determines its size and quality.

Biobest N.V. produces bumblebee hives for fruit production.

Contrary to honeybees which work well only when weather is warm and sunny, bumblebees also perform when it is cold and rainy.
Biobest N.V. has suitable hives especially for the fruit culture. It is also possible to use the Multi-Hive.

Detection techniques
  Pheromone lures (Attract) and traps
There are three kinds of traps on the market.

Delta trap

Funnel trap

McPhail trap

Biological control of Codling moth
  Pheromone lures

For application in fruit production, different kinds of pheromone lures are available. The pheromone lures are sold in packages of two lures, and last 5 to 7 weeks. Store lures in a refrigerator or freezer.

Here is a list of pest insects for which pheromone lures are available:

Adoxophyes orana   Summer Fruit Tortrix
Cydia pomonella   Codling moth
Synanthedon myopaeformis   Small red-belted clearwing
Archips podana Fruit Tree Tortrix
Archips rosana European Leaf Roller
Cossus cossus Goat moth
Hedya dimidioalba
Leucoptera scitella Pear leaf blister moth
Lithocolletis blancardella Spotted tentiform leafminer
Lymantria dispar Gypsy moth
Pandemis heparana Dark fruit tree Tortrix (moth)
Spilonota ocellana Eye spotted bud moth
Yponomeuta malinella Small ermine moth
Zeuzera pyrina Leopard moth
  Biological control of Codling moth
  Pheromone lures

  • a. period of treatment
By monitoring the Codling moth flight, fecundity can be exactly determined and treatment can be applied at the right moment.
  • b. damage threshold
When more than 25 moths/ha are captured, the economic damage threshold is exceeded, and it is time to spray.
  Granupom
Granupom is a selective biological insecticide, based on the Cydia pomonella (Codling moth) granulosis virus, for the control of Codling moth in fruit production.
Treatment has to be applied in relation with duration and intensity of moth flights, which can be determined by using pheromone traps.
In general, a treatment with 500 ml/ha is sufficient.
For the first treatment, you can use a dose of 300 ml/ha, and the remaining quantity (200 ml) can be used for 2 or 3 additional sprays at 1-week intervals.

* Granupom is only allowed in Belgium.

  Leaf sprayings with Bioforce
Bioforce is an extract of fresh Ascophyllum nodosum, the most biologically active and nutritious seaweed used in agriculture and horticulture.

The product contains 1% boron, which is immediately available to the plant. Bioforce improves pollen quality and can prolong pollen germination. This results in a considerable increase of apple and pear production. Field tests have shown that the use of Bioforce leads to the improved quality and increased yield of the crop.
Three treatments must be applied during the flowering period. For each treatment, use 1 to 1,5 L (per ha) of the product.
